      Centre for Malaysia Pribumi Studies
    •     Centre for Malaysia Pribumi Studies

        Objectives

Indigenous Malaysians, which consists of Orang Asli in Peninsula Malaysia and the pribumis of Sabah and Sarawak, are the minority population in Malaysia. However, this group have impressed others with their unique culture and lifestyle that they inherited from their ancestors for thousands of years.

However, over time this unique culture which symbolises the remnants of the earliest generation of mankind to live in this part of the world, are affected by civilisation and the modernisation of the world. Adding this to the little understanding about these groups, their culture and lifestyle are at stake of being diminished. In reality much can be learned from them.

There is therefore a need to collect documents and preserve the information. To date, there is no intellectual and academic centre that focus on the collaboration research of the indigenous Malaysians that has been initiated at any of the 17 local universities similar to those already in existence in Australia, New Zealand and America. Thus University of Malaya, as the oldest and most renowned university especially in research and development has taken the initiative to house such a centre.

    •     National Antarctic Research Centre (Antarctica)

        Objectives

Antarctica offers a unique and timely opportunity for scientists to embark into a new and challenging international research arena. Researchers from the University of Malaya are amongst the pioneers that took up the challenge to venture into Antarctic research. At the turn of the millenium, the first team of four Malaysian scientists from the University of Malaya left for Scott Base, to study the long-range transport of biomass burning aerosols.

From the early studies on atmospheric science, the Antarctic research at the University of Malaya has expanded to cover biological aspects and geological studies. More recently, with the expansion, our scientists have embarked on several expeditions to Antarctica at the invitation of the Australian Antarctic Division. Geological studies are conducted with the cooperation of the government of South Africa. The Malaysian Antarctica Research Centre at the University of Malaya was a part of the national programme development in 2002.
